Dr. Sampathkumar is the newly appointed Medical Director of Delaware Physiatry. He previously served as an attending physician with Regional Medical Associates in Dover, Delaware, since 2019, where he specialized in treating patients with pain, and neurorehabilitation care. Evaluating and treating patients suffering from various musculoskeletal, acute, chronic pain conditions and neurological issues, he offers various treatment options, from peripheral musculoskeletal injections, sacroiliac joint injections and acupuncture, to botulinum toxin (BOTOX), and phenol nerve block injections. Dr. Sampathkumar also occasionally provides coverage for transcranial magnetic stimulation for patients living with depression and neurological problems.
In addition to his responsibilities at his practice in Dover, Dr. Sampathkumar is the 2018 co-founder of JH Rehabilitation, a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation center in Chennai, India, that focuses on neurorehabilitation and has notably served patients that have sustained strokes and traumatic brain injuries. He spent more than a year as an attending physician for his center between 2018 and 2019, after which he immigrated to the U.S. Additionally, Dr. Sampathkumar serves on the board of directors for the Brain Injury Association of Delaware. It is the state's foremost nonprofit organization, which focuses on assisting those affected by brain injuries. He is also the Brain Injury Medical Director for Bayhealth Hospital Sussex Campus - Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.
Dr. Sampathkumar has been participating at various professional presentations as a lecturer, course director, moderator and invited speaker. He has also published several scholarly articles and contributed chapters to four medical textbooks and pocketbooks. Lauded for his diligent work ethic, Dr. Sampathkumar was inspired to work in medicine by his parents, who are in the field of healthcare in India. He gravitated to his current specialty while growing up in his native country, during which time he suffered several injuries while playing soccer. Due to his experiences, Dr. Sampathkumar became interested in sports rehabilitation, which later evolved into a more multifaceted dedication to the medical profession, encompassing complex and neurological rehabilitation.
Dr. Sampathkumar received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in India in 2010. He subsequently completed an internal medicine internship on campus, followed by a second internship in internal medicine at Unity Health System in Rochester, New York, a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Metropolitan Hospital Center of New York Medical College, and a fellowship in brain injury medicine at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Sampathkumar is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation through the American Board of Physical Medicine Rehabilitation, as well as via the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Aligned with several industry-related organizations in support of his career, Dr. Sampathkumar is currently a member of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Academic Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is also a registered medical practitioner of Tamil Nadu Medical Council of India. Recognizing his achievements, Dr. Sampathkumar was twice named as the Physician of the Year at PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Dover in 2019 and 2020 and was named as the Employee of the Month in July 2021. Furthermore, he was recognized with awards for his research and scholarly pursuits at the Metropolitan Hospital Center of New York Medical College, in 2016 and 2017.
