Dr. Whitaker did have a challenging childhood; however, the impediments in her environment did not deter her from her goals. She often says to herself, "hard and impossible are defined differently. I am a work in progress and can only learn. What is the next action I can take even though it seems hard now? Because I can imagine it, the idea is not impossible as long as I keep looking for a different angle to make progress on."
