Dr. Bright has contributed a variety of articles, manuscripts, book chapters and reviews on the subject of cancer research.
LUBBOCK, TX, January 18, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert K. Bright, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After losing his older sister to a rare lung disease, Dr. Bright was inspired to pursue a career in medicine. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in bacteriology, with an emphasis in biochemistry, from the University of Idaho, he served as second lieutenant for the United States Army Reserve. From there, he rose to become a first lieutenant during Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Provide Comfort, and a captain. While serving in the military, Dr. Bright furthered his education, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular and cellular immunology from the University of Texas' Health Science Center and completing a fellowship through the National Cancer Institute.
A seasoned industry expert, Dr. Bright gained valuable industry expertise as a research technician while studying HIV, a research associate for the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio, and as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Wayne State University and the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Karmanos Cancer Institute. More recently, he worked as the chief of the Laboratory of Prostate Cancer Biology for the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute and the Robert Franz Cancer Center.
Supported by a vast breadth of professional knowledge, Dr. Bright excels today as a professor and graduate program adviser for the Department of Immunology and Molecular Microbiology at Texas Tech University's Health Sciences Center. On a daily basis, he teaches doctoral level students, conducts formal didactic lectures and cancer-related research, trains students in laboratory research and oversees medical, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level students. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Bright aligns himself with the American Association of Immunologists, the American Association of Cancer Researchers, the European Academy of Tumor Immunology, the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Institutes of Health.
Due to his considerable expertise, Dr. Bright has contributed a variety of articles, manuscripts, book chapters and reviews on the subject of cancer research. Additionally, he has served as an expert reviewer for such publications as the Journal of Immunology, the Journal of Immunotherapy, Vaccine, Clinical Cancer Research and more. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Bright received an Outstanding Teacher and Student Advocate Award through the Center for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, a Research Scholars Award though the American Cancer Society, and the Armand J. Guarino Award for Academic Excellence in Doctoral Studies from the University of Texas' Health Sciences Center. In recent years, he was named as an Innovative Mind in Prostate Cancer Research through the DOD Prostate Cancer Research Program.
While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Bright is most proud to have independently cloned a cancer-associated oncogenesis protein in 1997. Six months earlier, he had encountered a geneticist at the Pasteur Institute who had cloned the protein. Finding sequences that matched so well, they became colleagues in studying the subject. Resolving to teach the immune system to target the protein and destroy the cancer cell without harming the rest of the host, and later proving that such a thing was possible, he is gratified to have rendered such a contribution to the field of cancer research and human immunology. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bright aspires for his work to be included in cancer vaccine development.
