BOULDER, CO, January 19, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Robert Amsden Mortimer with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Mortimer celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A former political science professor at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, Dr. Mortimer taught, conducted research and wrote extensively in his area of expertise for more than 40 years. Retiring in 2006 as a full professor, he originally joined the institution in 1966 as an assistant professor, spent many years as the chair of the political science department between 1967 and 2004, and served as the co-director of the Institute for Advanced Study in African Studies during 1968. Throughout the course of his tenure, Dr. Mortimer also had the opportunity to teach abroad as a Fulbright professor at the University of Algiers and the University of Dakar in the Faculté des Sciences Juridiques et Economiques and as a visiting professor at the University of Abidjan. Additionally, he lectured at Mesa College in Colorado during 1986 and served as the director of the West African Research Center in Dakar in 1998. Prior to his work with Haverford College, Mr. Mortimer worked between 1965 and 1966 as an assistant professor at Prairie View A&M College in Texas.
As a Fulbright scholar in Toulouse, France, during the Algerian War, Dr. Mortimer became fascinated by Algeria's pursuit for independence. He began following the policies of newly independent states and his interest eventually led to his writing and academic career. Becoming an expert in international relations with a focus on developing countries and African states, Dr. Mortimer attributes his success to empathizing with countries working and fighting to be decolonized. His years of research have resulted in numerous books, including the third edition of "Politics and Society in Contemporary Africa," which he co-authored with Naomi Chazan, Peter Lewis, Donald Rothchild and Stephen John Stedman in 1999 through Lynne Rienner Publishers. One of his most widely read works, "The Third World Coalition in International Politics" was published by Praeger in 1980 with an updated edition in 1984 by Westview Press. He also contributed a multitude of book chapters and scholarly articles. He continues in his retirement to publish articles and book reviews, principally in "The Journal of North African Studies."
Dr. Mortimer is a former alumni trustee for his alma mater, Wesleyan University. An elected position, he served in this capacity between 1999 and 2002. As part of his professional contributions, he has been an active member of the African Studies Association and the American Political Science Association. Dr. Mortimer is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Mortimer received a Bachelor of Arts at Wesleyan University in 1960. He subsequently completed a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University in 1963 and 1968, respectively. In 1989, Dr. Mortimer was recognized by Choice Magazine with an Outstanding Academic Book Award.
