Dr. Goris was a respected attending physician and board-certified nuclear medicine specialist retired from Stanford University School of Medicine as emeritus professor. Specializing in performing procedures on patients to diagnose and treat illness using radioactive labelled pharmaceuticals, he has accrued four decades of experience in his field. Retired since 2012, Dr. Goris previously taught various courses on campus for nearly 39 years and worked as the chairman of the university panel on radiation safety from 2003 to 2010.
An expert in nuclear medicine and radiology, Dr. Goris has contributed significantly to the mathematics of image analysis. He has also conducted research in radio-immunotherapy, medical imaging processing, quantification for diagnosis and clinical validations. Additionally, Dr. Goris has been involved in 10 different clinical trials.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Goris has provided his wealth of knowledge to articles to several leading medical journals as an author or co-author, including the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Pediatric Pulmonology and Nuclear Medicine Communications. He has also authored five books and is currently co-authoring his sixth text with other renowned experts in their field. Dr. Goris has also served his community as a former chairperson of his local parish school board.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Goris earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Universiteit Leuven in Belgium in 1967, followed by a residency in radiation oncology in Belgium. Immigrating to the U.S. with his wife and one-year-old son with the help of a grant from the Belgium-American Educational Foundation, he graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a Doctor of Philosophy in medical physics in 1972. Although he did not speak any English at the time, he was fortunate to be surrounded by several Hungarians and Germans at the aforementioned university, which was very helpful. Dr. Goris has held a licentiate in medical sciences from KUL since 1978 and is a board-certified nuclear medicine specialist.
Dr. Goris has been affiliated with the European Association of Nuclear Medicine. He has also been active as a member, former reviewer of procedural guidelines, and former member of the scientific committee of the American Society of Nuclear Medicine. In 2021, Dr. Goris was honored with a Lifetime Honorary Medical Staff Award from Stanford University School of Medicine recognizing his dedication to patients and community.
