ABIQUIU, NM, January 20, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Douglas Coffin has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Best known for creating larger-than-life mixed media sculptures, contemporary paintings and unique steel objects, Mr. Coffin has garnered a laudable reputation as a talented native artist. Founding Doug Coffin Fine Art in 1990, his five decades of expertise has been inspired by the concepts of male and female energy, as well as time and space. Residing in the Santa Fe then Abiquiu, Mexico, area for the past four decades, Mr. Coffin has become a respected member of the community, one that is rich with artistic history. He also taught various courses at the College of Santa Fe and the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe.
Mr. Coffin's works have appeared in over 40 public collections, both locally and abroad, in such countries as Italy, Uzbekistan and Ecuador, including at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. His artwork was also featured within the Art in Embassy Program, an organization of the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, he was honored to have one of his large, 20-foot contemporary totem sculptures placed in the Rose Garden at the White House in November 1997 and another permanently placed at the front entrance of the New Mexico state capitol building. More recently, Mr. Coffin erected five 30-foot contemporary steel totem sculptures at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas.
To support various local causes, Mr. Coffin donates artwork each year to a cancer fund in Santa Fe. He is also deeply involved with the Art Embassy Program and many others that benefit residents of New Mexico.
A native of Kansas, Mr. Coffin grew up in the town of Lawrence and attended Haskell Indian Nations University, where his father served as a head coach. During this time, he became deeply enmeshed in Native American culture and their artistic traditions, which has continued to feature heavily in his present work. To pursue his artistic goals, Mr. Coffin earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in jewelry and sculpture at the University of Kansas. He later completed a Master of Fine Arts in metalworking at Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan.
Mr. Coffin was fortunate to receive a Ford Foundation Grant. He also earned a national teaching fellowship from Fort Wright College in Spokane, Washington, in 1975. Mr. Coffin has been recognized by the State of New Mexico Legislature with a Certificate of Recognition for his contributions. He also received a letter of appreciation from Nigeria, Abu Dhabi, Constantia.
Mr. Coffin is an enrolled member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Indian Nation.
