Prior to her success as a handmade jeweler, Ms. Gibbes served as the chairman of the hospital advisory board for Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. During this period, she was a member of a statewide review board for foster care facilities in order to combat the rise of child abuse in foster facilities and homes. Ms. Gibbes also served as the chairman of the aforementioned review board during the middle 1980s while actively contributing to the Junior League of Greenville, which is a nonprofit organization that helps women develop leadership skills through voluntarism.
In recognition of her vital role in the improvement of South Carolina's foster care system, Ms. Gibbes was notably selected for inclusion in the 1989 edition of "Outstanding Young Women of America."
