Dr. Amrik Sahota has over 35 years' experience working in medical research laboratories, clinical diagnostic laboratories, and biospecimen repositories, including nearly 30 years as associate director or director of such laboratories.
Dr. Sahota is a faculty member at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey in the following departments: (i) Professor of Genetics, Department of Genetics; (ii) Clinical Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS); and (iii) Clinical Professor, Division of Urology, RWJMS.
Dr. Sahota received his undergraduate and graduate education in the UK, including a PhD in genetic disorders of nucleotide metabolism from Guy's Hospital Medical School, University of London. He did post-doctoral training in genetic disorders of biopterin metabolism at Aston University and the Birmingham General Hospital. This was followed by post-doctoral research in the mutational basis of a rare kidney stone disease involving nucleotide metabolism and fellowship training in clinical molecular genetics at Indiana University Medical Center (IUMC), Indianapolis, Indiana. He then served as associate director of Molecular Genetics Services, a full-service diagnostics laboratory at IUMC. Dr. Sahota then moved to Rutgers University, where he served as director of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, RWJMS and as a member of the pathology staff at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Sahota currently serves as director of the Rutgers Clinical Genomics Laboratory.
Dr. Sahota is board certified in Molecular Diagnostics by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry and in Clinical Molecular Genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics. He is licensed as a Bioanalytical Laboratory Director by the State of New Jersey; he holds Certification of Qualification in several categories from the New York State Department of Health; and he is licensed as a Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist by the California Department of Public Health. Dr. Sahota is a Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, Royal College of Pathologists (UK), and the Royal Society of Biology (UK).
Dr. Sahota is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, American Society of Human Genetics, Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP), Biochemical Society (UK), British Society for Genetic Medicine, International Society for Nephrology, and the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
Dr. Sahota has multiple research interests, including: (i) mouse models for cystinuria and other kidney stone diseases; (ii) evaluation of cystine crystal growth inhibitors as a therapy for cystinuria; (iii) development of a new mouse model for Lesch-Nyhan disease that affects both the renal and the nervous system; (iv) development and implementation of molecular diagnostic tests; and (v) biorepositories for large-scale genomic studies. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and he has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in biomedical sciences. His work on cystinuria has been licensed to a pharmaceutical company for further drug development.
Dr. Sahota has served as a grant reviewer or consultant for several organizations and as a manuscript reviewer for over 30 journals. He is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Carcinogenesis. He has served as an inspector or team leader for the laboratory as well as the biorepository accreditation programs of the College of American Pathologists and as a member of the Training and Education Committee of AMP.
