Having come of age among a family doctors, Dr. Cotelingam obtained a Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the Punjab University at the Christian Medical College at Ludhiana in Punjab, India in 1966; and thereafter a Doctor of Medicine in Pathology in 1972.
His diversified career has spanned 54 years. In 1973, he completed additional training in Pathology at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, West Virginia, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at The Presbyterian Hospital, and in Hematopathology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
In 1977, he joined the United States Navy as a Lieutenant. During his Naval career, he served as Chief of Laboratory Service at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida, as Head of Anatomic Pathology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, later to become the New Walter Reed Military Medical Center.
He was assigned duty as the Lead Pathologist of the team that diagnosed President Ronald Reagan's colon cancer in 1985. As that time, Dr. Cotelingam served as a consultant in Hematopathology for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. His diagnostic responsibilities included services to members of the Supreme Court, Congress, and Foreign Dignitaries. Subsequently, Dr. Cotelingam was assigned as Director of the Tri-Service Fellowship Program in Hematopathology for the Department of Defense.
In 1989, Dr. Cotelingam was promoted to rank of full Professor at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda. He retired from active duty with the rank of Captain (USN).
Dr. Cotelingam moved to the Louisiana State University of the Health and Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was appointed as Director of the Clinical Pathology Laboratories in 1997. Subsequently he was named W.R. Mathews Professor of Pathology, and for a period as Interim Chair. He now serves also as the Medical Director of the Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory for the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and for COVID 19 testing at the Emerging Viral Threat Laboratory at the University Hospital. During these years, Dr. Cotelingam has held numerous subspecialty workshops on Hematopathology in the continental US, India, Ireland, Canada and Germany.
Over his remarkable career, Dr. Cotelingam has published numerous scientific papers in the peer reviewed medical literature, and a Montograph on Leukemia. His work has been widely reference in the contemporary literature and he has been celebrated as a mentor to generations of medical students, residents, and fellows in various institutions. He serves on several scientific editorial boards.
For his loyal military services, Dr. Cotelingam has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (W/ Bronze Star), National Defense Service Metal, the Outstanding Service Medal from USUHS, a Silver Medal of Excellence by the North American Alumni of the Christian Medical College and the Louisiana Veterans Honor Metal by the Governor. Recently, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. He holds or has held membership in numerous professional organizations, including the United States-Canadian Academy of Pathology, the College of American Pathologist, the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Indian Medical Association, the Christian Medical Association India, the Washington Society of Pathologists, the Metropolitan Washington Association of Cytology, the American College of Physician Executives, the Hope Foundation, the Shreveport Medical Society, the International Society of Laboratory Hematology, the Society for Hematopathology, the European Association for Hematopathology, and the Society of medical Consultants to the Armed Forces.
Dr. Cotelingam has shown remarkable passion for his calling. He credits his tutelage largely to his parents and believes the highlight of his career was in 1985 when he served as Lead Pathologist to President Ronald Reagan.
