Contributing over four decades of experience, Mr. Togut offers his mentorship to every attorney at his firm and serves as a senior advisor on all cases. Highly regarded by his partners and fellow attorneys, he has also garnered respect by judges and the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to establishing his firm, Mr. Togut practiced with Otterbourg, Steindler, Houston and Rosen (now Otterbourg PC) in New York City between 1973 and 1979.
Separate from his primary responsibilities, Mr. Togut serves as a registered mediator in the Southern District of New York. Since 1981, he has been a member of the panel of trustees approved by the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also been active as a lecturer on behalf of numerous professional groups and organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, including its international program in Europe and the Airline Bankruptcies for a European Audience. Mr. Togut also taught as an instructor at Harvard University Law School.
A contributing author to numerous leading law journals, including Norton Bankruptcy Law Advisor and ABI Journal, Mr. Togut has also contributed to Forbes magazine and the American Lawyer. He has been featured in the media several times, in an interview on Bloomberg TV in 2021 and was profiled in the business sections of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Additionally, Mr. Togut was quoted in a Bloomberg article written by Craig Torres, Paula Seligson and Josh Saul, which expounded upon the economic state of the U.S. since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Long dedicated to supporting the arts, Mr. Togut was active as the chairman of the Berkshires International Film Festival. He was also a board member for the Boston Symphony, the Williamstown Theater Festival, and the Palm Beach Opera. Professionally, Mr. Togut has maintained his affiliation with such professional organizations as the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. He is also an elected fellow of the International Insolvency Institute and the American College of Bankruptcy and is a past president of the Bankruptcy Lawyers Bar Association of New York.
Mr. Togut received a Bachelor of Science in economics, with honors, from New York University in 1971, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Saint John's University School of Law in New York in 1974. He has been admitted to practice by the New York Bar Association, the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second District, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Delaware, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
Highlighting his success, Mr. Togut has been named to multiple leading law publications, including Lawdragon 500 and Chambers USA. He has also been recognized as a New York Super Lawyer every year since 2007, as the Restructuring Lawyer of the Year recently by Global 100 in 2020, and as an Honoree for Leadership in Corporate Reorganizations by the Lincoln Center Corporate Council for 2019, among many other accolades.
