For 47 years, Ms. Anderson played violin with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Growing up in a household where music was always present, she began piano lessons at age 6, and violin lessons at 11. For 7 consecutive summers, she attended the Junior Conservatory Camp in northern Vermont and received a "Junior of Music" diploma. The emphasis at the camp was on music theory and composition as well as performance. The next summer she attended the Ecole Americaine in Fontainebleau, France, again to study composition and music theory as well as violin. Her composition studies were with Nadia Boulanger.
A subsequent summer was spent at Tanglewood where she studied with members of the BSO and played in various chamber music groups. She graduated from New England Conservatory, a well-known conservatory of music in Boston, with a double major in violin and composition, honors with distinction, in 1965. She subsequently moved to D.C. For the next 2 years she played with the Richmond symphony and in 1968, she joined the NSO, from which she retired in 2014.
Along with orchestra playing, she played in many chamber music groups --- violin, viola, viola da gamba, and voice -- too numerous to mention. Chamber music has always been a great passion of hers.
Around 1985 she began what would be a long and still ongoing career as a teacher of violin and viola and her students have been of all ages. In the mid 70's, she took a Smithsonian Associates class on "the salons of Europe" and it inspired her to try forming a salon tradition that has flourished these many years right up into the present.
SalonLine performances of local artists have taken place in her home most Sunday nights featuring musicians from all over the Washington, D.C. area and beyond. When the pandemic hit, she and her husband converted the performances to online live streamed events which are subsequently captured on YouTube into perpetuity and can reach a national as well as international audience. She and her husband run a similar, but less frequent series in an historic house in Sterling, VA. where they maintain an antique shop and Lebanese cafe. They devote a fair amount of time and energy to the issue of historic preservation.
