At Rochester University, Dr. MacKinnon has served as Professor of Psychology and director of the MacKinnon Psychology and Counseling Clinic, which the university named after him in 2017. In his role as a professor, he teaches advanced psychological courses, focusing on basic transitional issues, relationship issues and behavioral sciences. For his inimitable performance, Dr. MacKinnon earned the title of Professor Emeritus of psychology in 2021.
Adjacent to his work as a psychologist and professor, Dr. MacKinnon has devoted some of his time to volunteering with the prostate cancer support group at Beaumont Hospital for several years. From 2005 to 2021, he was called upon as the chairman of psychology in the behavioral sciences department at Rochester University. Moreover, Dr. MacKinnon has acted as the vice president of the Academy for the Psychoanalytic Arts.
Dr. MacKinnon initially pursued a formal education at Rochester University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in religious education. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in human resources development from Oakland University and a Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy from Wayne State University. In 1997, he graduated from the University of Detroit-Mercy with a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology. During the course of his subsequent career, he has been recognized as one of the Distinguished Faculty of the Year by Rochester University. Likewise, in 2020, Dr. MacKinnon was named as a Top Docs Psychologist.
