Harboring a deep passion for the field of art, Dr. McCullagh began her career as an intern for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1972. Thereafter, she garnered experience as a curatorial assistant at Harvard University, and as a curatorial assistant in the department of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago. Renowned for her expertise, Dr. McCullagh continued to work for the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago for over four decades.
In 2016, Dr. McCullagh was recruited to serve as the director of the Gray Collection Trust, and later earned the title of director emerita in 2019. In this capacity, she has overseen over 150 works of art, acquiring, integrating, and ultimately dispersing works in the collection. Her duties included performing research, making artwork accessible to the public and giving tours. A trusted voice in her field, Dr. McCullagh served on the board of directors for the Print Council of America, and has been invited to lecture and teach at various universities including Smith College and the University of Chicago.
Dr. McCullagh has devoted much of her time on numerous committees and boards, including for the Antiquarian Society, the Old Masters Society of the Art Institute, the Harvard Art Museums drawing committee, the Northeast Harbor Library, the College of the Atlantic, and the Graduate School Advisory Council of Harvard University, among others. Recent success in exhibitions include "Pure Drawings: Gray Collection" held at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Morgan Library and Museum, and Berkeley Museum. She also contributed numerous articles to professional journals. Aside from her primary vocational pursuits, Dr. McCullagh has collaborated with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois and the Woman's Board of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Dr. McCullagh initially pursued a formal education at Smith College, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. She subsequently earned both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard University. Garnering subsequent recognition for her accomplishments, she earned the title of Clarence Kennedy Distinguished Professor from Smith College and been lauded for the vast amount of funding she was able to accrue on behalf of the Art Institute of Chicago.
