Driven by a strong passion for helping students, Ms. Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in business education, with an emphasis in secretarial science, from Lander University in 1992. Upon graduating, she served as an educator for Greenwood County School District 50 between 1993 and 2018. Over the years, she taught business education, including financial concepts and integrated business applications, to high school and middle school students. In recent years, she became the owner of ShirleyJs LLC in 2020, through which she helps business owners create profit and loss statements and other financial statements. She also gives a scholarship to her grandchildren who are enrolled in college. In addition, she gives generously to those who are in need.
An expert in her field, Ms. Johnson has also held a Master of Education in administration and supervision from Clemson University since 2007, is a licensed minister through the Youth Crusade Evangelistic Center and is a board certified teacher. While working in education, she maintained affiliation with several organizations, including the National Education Association and the South Carolina Association for Adult and Continuing Education, to remain abreast of changes in the field.
A strong believer of Jesus Christ as the one who guided and helped her through all the trials of her life, Ms. Johnson decided to author a book titled, "Overcoming Adversity," in 2021. It documents the different obstacles she experienced and how she overcame them. Outside of her work in the field, she has served as a volunteer teacher and book donor for the Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, and has donated books to the Michigan Juvenile Detention Center. For her professional achievements, she was named Teacher of the Year four times through Central School and Genesis Education Center and was honored as a Reading Teacher of the Year.
Although her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Johnson is most proud of being a board-certified educator. She had originally aspired to be a principal, but she continued to focus on being a teacher. Furthermore, she prides herself on her receipt of her master's degree when she was in her fifties. In the coming years, Ms. Johnson aims to complete her second book, "The Hand of God," which features a more in-depth exploration of her feelings throughout the adversities she experienced and how the hand of God carried her through each of them.
