Born in Seoul, Korea on July 10th, 1978 and receiving her first piano lesson at the age of three, Ms. Jeon conducted her first performance at nine years old. Pursuing an education at the Berklee College of Music in 1997, she later obtained a master's degree in contemporary improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2004. Ms. Jeon has since produced four albums as a leader, featuring jazz standards and her original compositions.
Notably, Ms. Jeon was recognized as the first Korean professor at the Berklee College of Music. Since 2010, she has been active as an assistant professor in the Piano Department of the Berklee College of Music. Since 2018, Ms. Jeon has utilized her expertise as an associate professor in the Piano Department of the Berklee College of Music. Additionally, she has served as a Professor of Jazz at the University of Massachusetts since 2010.
As a testament to her talent, Ms. Jeon has received numerous accolades. She was presented with the Piano Chair Award for Jazz Performance, the City Music Legacy Award and the Exemplary Mentorship Award from the Berklee College of Music. Moreover, she accepted an award for Best Jazz Album from the New England Urban Music Awards and her work was honored amongst the Top 10 Modern Creative Jazz Albums by CD Baby. Ms. Jeon has likewise been featured on several broadcast television shows.
Amongst the many highlights of her career, Ms. Jeon is proud to have performed with the renowned saxophonist Benny Goldson in addition to having performed her own music with her band at the 2009 Jarasum International Jazz Festival. She is also a leader of her own band Hey Rim Jeon & Friends. She has been further affiliated with the Massachusetts Conference for Women and the Korean Cultural Society of Boston. Ms. Jeon attributes her success to her mother who exposed her to different kinds of music at a young age, her late father for his support and the many mentors that she encountered throughout her career who guided her.
