With more than 25 years of experience on behalf of the Kingler College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University, Dr. Schaefer was bestowed with the distinguished title of professor emerita in 2021. Prior to her retirement, she developed courses in which she constructively related theology, the natural sciences and technology and held administrative positions as the director of interdisciplinary environmental ethics and the director of interdisciplinary ethics. She frequently hosted seminars in her areas of expertise and co-steered a faculty discussion group of theologians, scientists and philosophers on issues at the boundaries of their disciplines.
Dr. Schaefer's primary academic responsibility was teaching students how to engage meaningfully in theological discourse informed by the current scientific understanding of the world and, from this discourse, to discern ways of living responsibly within Earth. Among the new courses she created were religious foundations for ecological ethics, the human person, religion, science and ethics, and the faith of scientists. She teamed with physicists to develop and teach the origin and nature of the universe and energy use and human-induced climate change. Her capstone seminars for the interdisciplinary minor in environmental ethics focused on urgent ecological issues in which she involved pertinent science and economics faculty.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Schaefer authored and edited several professional works including the groundbreaking Theological Foundations for Environmental Ethics published by Georgetown University Press in which she retrieved concepts from earlier Christian theology and reconstructed them for application to ecological problems today. She also contributed numerous scholarly articles and essays to theology, ethics and conservation science journals and anthologies and helped draft Healing Earth, the interactive online environmental science textbook commissioned by the Society of Jesus's Higher Education Secretariat.
Dr. Schaefer was instrumental in various other roles. She notably spent over two decades in local, state and federal governmental positions from 1980 to 2002. She served on the State of Wisconsin's gubernatorial energy task force, the radioactive waste review board to which she was appointed by governors of both political parties, and the legislature's special committee on low-level radioactive waste management. Among other roles to her credit, she served as chairperson of Sheboygan County's local emergency response planning committee, a member of the citizens advisory committee on remediating the Sheboygan River, and a consultant to the Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission on involving the public in addressing problems in the Great Lakes.
Highly educated, Dr. Schaefer received a Bachelor of Arts in political science at Marquette University in 1961 and a Master of Arts in history at the University of West Florida in 1974. She returned to academia to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree in religious studies at Marquette in 1994. She distinguished herself as a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Religion, the Association of Environmental Studies and Sciences, the Catholic Theological Society of America, and the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture. Active for many years in the Society for Conservation Biology, she collaborated with researchers within the religion and conservation biology working group, lead the development of best practices for members to consider when engaging faith leaders and communities in research and practice projects, and continues to serve as a handling editor of manuscripts on values, ethics and faith submitted to Conservation Biology.
Dr. Schaefer was the recipient of a Religion and Science Course Award from the John Templeton Foundation in 1996 and a Quality and Excellence in Teaching Science and Religion Award from the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences in 1998. She was a Rosamund Gifford Scholar between 1957 and 1961. She also received several faculty development awards from Marquette University that helped advance her research and writing.
