Initially inspired by his father, who was also a lawyer, Mr. Birnberg followed his passion in writing and teaching to amass a career in law and education. He obtained a bachelor's and master's degree in English from the University of California and California State University Dominguez Hill, respectively. Following these accomplishments, he graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Loyola University in 1982, cum laude. In 1984, Mr. Birnberg concluded his formal education and earned a Master of Laws in admiralty and maritime law at Tulane University.
Mr. Birnberg has been admitted to practice law before all United States District Courts of California and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has been certified as an admiralty specialist by the State Bar of California and holds a teaching credential via the University of Southern California.
Mr. Birnberg began his legal career in 1982, at which point he was employed as an attorney in bankruptcy law at Sentry Civilian in Los Angeles. After garnering experience in this role, he began working for his eponymous practice, Cory A. Birnberg PC, in 1984. Mr. Birnberg also performs administrative law for Luxor and harbor workers. During the length of his career, he is particularly proud to have secured over $1 million for a client during a pivotal case.
For over 20 years, Mr. Birnberg served as an instructor in maritime and admiralty at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Moreover, he contributed legal blog posts to the Bar Association of San Francisco for 20 years. He is also a member of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association and the Workers' Injury Law & Advocacy Group, and a former member of the Maritime Lawyers Association. Aside from his primary vocational pursuits, he notably spent 10 years in practice as a volunteer attorney in Marin County on behalf of Spanish-speaking clients. Moreover, he is the commissioner and former president of the commission on admiralty and maritime matters for the State Bar of California.
