Dr. Gerald Mizejewski was recognized as a research fellow of the National Science Foundation.
ALBANY, NY, February 08, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Gerald Mizejewski has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing on 50 years of professional expertise, Dr. Mizejewski currently excels with the New York State Department of Health as an assistant director for the Fetal Defects Marker Laboratory and a senior research scientist for the Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research, in which he works in the division of laboratory medicine's Oncofetal Antigen Laboratory. Prior to his present roles, he worked in adjunct faculty and executive positions with the Hypothyroid Newborn Screening Laboratory, Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the State University of New York at Albany and Albany Medical College of Union University.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Mizejewski also gained valuable experience in the field with a number of institutions, including the New York State Department of Health, the University of South Carolina, the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland, College Park. Additionally, he has contributed to the board of directors for the Northeastern New York chapter of the Alzheimer's Association as well as the American Cancer Society, the National Kidney Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Between 1957 and 1963, Dr. Mizejewski served in the U.S. Marine Corps before being honorably discharged.
Dr. Mizejewski has earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Duquesne University in addition to a Master of Science in cell biology and biochemistry and a Doctor of Philosophy in embryology, physiology and biochemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1970, he also completed postdoctoral coursework at the University of Michigan. Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Mizejewski is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Zoologists, the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, the International Society for Oncodevelopmental Biology and Medicine and the American Federation for Clinical Research, to name a few.
Alongside his primary responsibilities, Dr. Mizejewski has dedicated his time and resources to the American Cancer Society, the Christian Service Brigade, the YMCA Indian Guide Program and the National Kidney Foundation. Due to his considerable knowledge, he has provided his wealth of knowledge to several works, including presenting the discussion "Present and Future Clinical Uses of Alpha-Fetoprotein" and editing "Biological Activities of Alpha-Fetoprotein" and "Alpha-Fetoprotein and Congenital Disorders." Throughout his career, Dr. Mizejewski has garnered patents for the development of growth inhibitory and cancer peptides for therapeutic use in cancer monitoring, growth and metastasis, and became one of five world experts on a birth defect and cancer protein called alpha-fetoprotein.
For his outstanding efforts in the field, Dr. Mizejewski was recognized as a research fellow of the National Science Foundation and accepted a grant through the National Cancer Institute. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, he is incredibly proud of obtaining patents for the development of anti-cancer peptides and being involved in the diagnosis of fetal defects. Within the coming years, Dr. Mizejewski intends to continue his research at the Wadsworth Center within the New York State Department of Health.
