For more than 26 years, Dr. Thorman, with six decades of experience, has consulted for foreign federal and state geological surveys and mining and petroleum companies through CTGS (Chuck Thorman Geological Services International, Inc.) in the U.S, South America, and West Africa. In addition to evaluating exploration programs, Dr. Thorman regularly keeps in contact with mining and petroleum geologist to keep up-to-date on new developments.
Prior to forming Chuck Thorman Geological Services International, Inc. (CTGS) in 1995, Dr. Thorman was a research geologist and manager with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Denver from 1971 to 1995, and has been a USGS Scientist Emeritus since 1995. He was head of a 2-man geology department at Olympic Community College in Bremerton, Washington and associate professor of structural geology at the University of Oregon from 1965 to 1971. His professional career began in 1962 with Humble Oil & Refining Co. as structural geologist in the Basin & Range and the Ardmore-Anadarko Basin. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Thorman has published more than 150 articles in a host of scientific journals and publications and has shared his expertise leading training seminars in the U.S., Brazil, and Colombia. During the past 60 years, he has presented more than 50 oral presentations at professional society meetings.
During his tenure with the USGS, Dr. Thorman played a central role in training geologists in the newly formed Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) and coauthored maps of Brazil's geology and gold deposits. He attributes his passion for geology to his grandfather, who gifted him with a geology pick at a young age and took him on visits to numerous oil fields throughout the American Southwest.
Dr. Thorman holds a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of Redlands (1958), and a Master of Science in geology (1961) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1962) in geology from the University of Washington. In the coming years, Dr. Thorman intends to complete a research project that may disprove a widely held theory regarding the interpretation of depth of burial of rocks during regional metamorphism based on pressure.
