For more than 25 years, Dr. Akinyemi thrived as an industrial hygiene program manager for the United States Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, he focused on evaluating the health and safety of marines and soldiers at the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Akinyemi had previously established his occupational health expertise at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, with which he served as an environmental and physical scientist as well as an industrial hygienist.
After obtaining a master's degree from Northern Illinois University in 1969, Dr. Akinyemi earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Howard University in 1972. He eventually continued his education at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he graduated with a Master of Public Health in 1981. In addition to his career with the U.S. military, Dr. Akinyemi excelled as an assistant professor of biology at Towson University for a number of years.
During the early 1970s, Dr. Akinyemi was recognized with numerous accolades on behalf of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Since his retirement, he has been active as a writer of professional biographies and recently completed a biography of his late wife. In the coming years, Dr. Akinyemi intends to honor his late wife's legacy by building a library in her childhood hometown of Kangundo, Kenya.
