When Ms. Hedges became involved in project management, it was a relatively new field. She began her career as a research assistant for the RAND Corporation in 1978 where she worked in the field of nuclear targeting. Two years later, she took a position as a research associate with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) where she worked in strategic planning and alternative energy. In 1984 she was promoted into a project manager position.
In 1990, Ms. Hedges was promoted to the position of Director of Project Management and Controls and was further promoted to Senior Vice President and Corporate Director of Program Execution for the corporation. In addition to establishing a corporate Program Management Organization (PMO), she provided troubleshooting on projects in South America, Europe, and Africa, as well as in the United States. Some of her most interesting projects include providing project management leadership for the 1996 Republican National Convention, the XXXII Super Bowl, the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad (Athens Olympics), satellite-based instrument systems projects, and the Loma Linda Proton Accelerator Cancer Treatment project.
In 2013, Ms. Hedges established her own company, Program Management & Controls, LLC, which provides consulting services in program and project management and in strategic planning, to major organizations, supporting them in enhancing their program and project management infrastructures. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of California San Diego where she has been teaching Business Project Management for the past decade.
Notably, Ms. Hedges has been distinguished among the Top 25 International Influential Women in Project Management by the Project Management Institute. This was an impressive feat, as only two Americans including herself were chosen for the list. She was also the recipient of the TWIN Award, honoring women in industry and was the President of ATHENA, an organization promoting women in science and technology.
Ms. Hedges obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Pepperdine University in 1977. She subsequently earned a Master of Business Administration from George Mason University in 1985. She is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute. She intends to continue teaching and promoting the field of program management & controls through her company. Additionally, she volunteers with various not-for-profit organizations.
