Dr. Farina is an associate professor of religion at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, who has taught courses on religion and spirituality since 2006. Focusing his studies on the intersection between religion and law, as well as American religious history and the history of Western spirituality, his decision to pursue an academic career in religion stems from his conviction that social change begins with the personal. Dr. Farina's passion for the field was also spurred by his experiences and involvement in the spiritual renewal movement that took place during the early 1970s.
A former senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Dr. Farina spent four years overseeing the Catholicism and civic renewal program as its director, which studied the correlation between Catholicism and civic society. Prior to his commitments in Washington, he briefly practiced corporate and church-state law as a member of the health care practice group at the firm of Ice Miller in Indianapolis between 1998 and 2000. Aligned with several civic organizations over the years, Dr. Farina was on the board of directors of the Post Classical Ensemble. He was also a member of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.
As a part of his academic efforts, Dr. Farina has authored and edited three series of books. He was general editor of the Crossroad Publishing Company 12-volume series, "Spiritual Legacy." He was also the editor-in-chief for 65 volumes of the critically acclaimed "Classics of Western Spirituality" published by Paulist Press between 1980 and 1992 and was a general editor of the 25-volumes of the "Sources of American Spirituality" series. Some of Dr. Farina's books notably include "Beauty for Ashes: Spiritual Reflections on the Attack on America," which won a Best Book in Spirituality Award from the Catholic Press Association, "Great Spiritual Masters", "An American Experience of God,", "Romantic Religion in Ante-Bellum America" and "Teilhard: Essays on the Thought of Teilhard de Cardin." Additionally, Dr. Farina has published numerous articles on various topics concerning law and religion.
Highly educated, Dr. Farina earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vassar College in 1972. He also received a Master of Divinity from Yale University in 1976, a Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University in 1979 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from New York University in 1996.
