GIG HARBOR, WA, February 23, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Martin has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Tulane University, Dr. Martin obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi. He subsequently completed a straight medicine internship at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, following which he completed a residency in Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Upon finishing his residency he served two years as a psychiatrist at Keesler AFB on the Mississippi coast during the Vietnam War, rising from Lieutenant to Major and serving as Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry.
He spent several years in Birmingham, Alabama first as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and later as a practicing psychiatrist in town. After studying with Masters and Johnson in St. Louis he was recruited to the Cleveland Clinic where he founded the Human Sexuality Program and directed it for seven years. He then went back to Mississippi to found a private psychiatric hospital, Gulf Oaks Hospital in Biloxi. He wrote its Bylaws, oversaw hiring of key staff, and shepherded it through Joint Commission accreditation as its Medical Director before moving on.
In 1992 he took a position with VA Puget Sound, where over a twenty year period he taught on the University of Washington Psychiatry faculty, did schizophrenia research, directed the outpatient psychiatry clinic, and later the opioid substitution therapy clinic. During his VA years he became very active in the American Psychiatric Association, serving as President of the Washington State Psychiatric Association and for thirteen years its representative in the APA Assembly where he received a number of honorific awards for service.
After retiring from VAPS he took short-term positions in the prison and state hospital systems in Washington, and served for a period as Medical Director of the 850-bed Western State Hospital. More recently he has served as a staff doctor at Behavioral Health Resources in Olympia, WA. He has published numerous articles in scientific journals and spent 38 of his 52 years practicing in the public sector, treating altogether some 12000-14000 patients. For hobbies he enjoys playing piano, hiking and doing bird and wildlife photography, having photographed on six continents. He is an avid contributor of photos to iNaturalist. Happily married for fifty years to Constance Branch of Wilmington, NC, he has three children and seven grandchildren.
