RAYNE, LA, February 23, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph P. Pete, PhD, NCC, AP, MAC, CAC, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Pete earned a Bachelor of Science in social work from Southern University in 2005. He subsequently obtained a Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling and disability studies from the aforementioned university in 2008. He then received a full Fellowship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008 to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in rehabilitation psychology. During his tenure at UW Madison, Dr. Pete received comprehensive training in research methodology and designs, statistical analysis, outcome measurements, therapeutic program implementation, program evaluation, college/university teaching, and clinical supervision.
Since 2013, Dr. Pete has worked as an assistant professor, program coordinator, and university field work internship supervisor for Alabama State University undergraduate program in Rehabilitation Services with a Concentration in Addiction. While serving in capacity of an Assistant Professor at Alabama State University he cofounded an educational curriculum known as the track model. The track model allowed undergraduate students in the Rehabilitation Services undergraduate program to earned prerequisites to their prospective graduate and/or doctoral program while matriculating in their undergraduate program. Therefore, in essence, students graduated with their Bachelor's degree and would have already applied and had been accepted to graduate/doctoral programs (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Prosthetic and Orthotics, and Doctorate in Physical Therapy). Additionally, Dr. Pete earned a Research Fellowship from Langston University during his tenure as an Assistant professor at Alabama State University. His research interest included, but was not limited to, vocational rehabilitation for persons with disabilities, workforce development for undergraduate students, and employment for persons with substance use and mental health disabilities.
Dr. Pete's work as a college/university educator and research fellow established him as a scholar in the field of rehabilitation, earned him the American Rehabilitation Counseling Research Award in 2015, and put him in a distinctive position to secure millions of dollars in grant awards from various universities and federal grantors such as, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMHSA), University of Wisconsin Targeted Communities, Langston University Rehabilitation Research and Training Center, and Maternal and Child Health Division of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to provide educational and employment services and training for students and persons with disabilities from under served, under representative, and marginalized populations.
In his present role, Office of Addictive Disorders Inpatient Facility Director in the State of Louisiana, Dr. Pete manages a gender specific (i.e., all males) 40 bed, 28 days; residential substance abuse treatment facility for men with co-occurring disorders (e.g., substance abuse and mental health). He leads a treatment team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and licensed practicing counselors who work together as a team to provide rehabilitation treatment intervention for clients with substance use and mental health disorders. Since his appointment in his current position as Office of Addictive Disorders Inpatient Facility Director at Capital Area Recovery Program (CARP) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he has been very involved in the recovery community. His work earned him a nomination to serve as an expert on addiction and recovery support services for the State Collaborative Plan in 2018 to address the Opioid Epidemic in the State of Louisiana.
In addition to his current primary career endeavor as Office of Additive Disorders Facility Director, Dr. Pete continues to work part time in capacity of a college/university educator and field experience/ internship clinical supervisor (i,e., professor) at Southern University A&M College and University (SUBR) in the department of Rehabilitation Counseling and Disability Studies undergraduate program in Rehabilitation Services - Baton Rouge campus. He maintains a professional identity as an educator, researcher, professional counselor, and addiction professional. He has a record of scholarship designed to improve quality of life for students and persons with disabilities (e.g., specifically, substance use and mental health disorders) chronic illness and disease. He continues to worked collaboratively with community, community of practice, key disability and rehabilitation professionals and stakeholders to ensure active involvement in processes to improve capacity, infrastructure, culture, and environment(s) relative to improve service provision (e.g., program evaluation, service, training, and best practices, etc.) and employment to enhance quality of life.
In closing, it should be noted that Dr. Pete work as an educator, researcher, and addiction professional were inspired by his lived experience in a family and community that were affected severely by becoming judicially involved with substance abuse and mental health disabilities. After witnessing the lack of access to resources, stigma associated with these conditions and how society treated those who had these types of disabilities, he wanted to become an advocate and champion for people suffering these conditions so they would be afforded the same opportunities of life, liberty, and happiness of those persons that did not experience these conditions. To further this goal, Dr. Pete has established a business, Pete Community Research Resource Center, which he plans to build in his community to utilize his expertise to provide a bridge between access and resources for underserved, under representative, disadvantaged, and marginalized population.
