TUCSON, AZ, February 24, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kay Bauman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Now retired, Dr. Bauman became renowned for her performance as a family practice physician, during which time she served migrant populations, as well as those afflicted with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). After graduating from medical school, she began working as a clinical director for Avondale Primary Care Center in 1974, a migrant health center that also cared for patients at the local department of corrections facility. Dr. Bauman subsequently spent two years with the National Health Services Corps in Harlingen, Texas, and the Neighborhood Health Center and Traditional Indian Alliance Urban Health Clinic in Tucson, Arizona, between 1978 and 1980 before entering private practice at the Tucson Clinic, in 1982.
After a year at this clinic, Dr. Bauman joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor in 1984. Four years later, she was promoted to an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Becoming active on many national committees including creating guidelines for AIDS, she established and began teaching the first course about caring for gay, lesbian and bisexual patients in any medical school. Garnering a reputation for her work, Dr. Bauman earned national recognition for her involvement and expertise.
Dr. Bauman remained on the UA campus for eight years before being recruited by the John A. Burns School of Medicine at University of Hawaii. Hired as an Associate Professor in 1992, she taught in the Family Medicine and Community Health Department, where she rose to a full professor, served as the interim co-chair of the department, and was named as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Education. From 2002 to 2010, Dr. Bauman was Medical Director of the prison and jail system for the State of Hawaii at first on loan from the Medical School and for the last 3 years transferred to the Department of Public Safety. Leaving Hawaii in 2010, Dr. Bauman taught as a Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in the Department of Family Community Medicine between 2010 and 2014. She was subsequently appointed to the position of Medical Director for the State of New Mexico Corrections Department in 2013, where she provided her leadership until 2014.
Outside of her medical teaching experiences, Dr. Bauman has taught educational skills to other medical doctors and at numerous meetings of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She has also been involved in a multitude of invited lectures and has served as a consultant to numerous organizations as an expert in her field. Lending her time and expertise to her community, Dr. Bauman was active with the Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona's medical advisory committee and the State of Arizona's Governor's Task Force on AIDS. She also served on various committees, including the liaison committee on medical education's subcommittee for clinical department evaluations at the University Medical Center of the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Bauman was active on the Department of Health's community planning group for HIV/AIDS in Hawaii. On a national level, Dr. Bauman served on the National Board of Medical Examiners, Step 3 Committee from 2001 to 2005.
Dr. Bauman is one of many authors of the 1994 book, "Evaluation and Management of Early HIV Infection (Clinical Practice Guideline Number 7)." She also contributed chapters to several books written by her colleagues, as well as manuscripts. Likewise, Dr. Bauman contributed to multiple peer-reviewed journals as a reviewer, including Family Medicine, the Journal of the American Board of Family Practice, and Annals of Internal Medicine, and has served as a pre-publication reviewer on several occasions.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Bauman studied at the University of Michigan, where she received a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1965 and a Master of Science in microbiology in 1965. Shortly thereafter, she attained a Master of Public Health at Tulane University in 1967. Continuing her education, Dr. Bauman completed a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Michigan in 1973, followed by an internship at Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix and a fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Dr. Bauman has been a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teacher of Family Physicians, and the National Board of Medical Examiners. She secured several grants from the National Institutes of Health and other organizations, totaling $4.2 million toward her academic career. Recognizing her achievements, she received an Award of Excellence from the Arizona AIDS Fund Trust in 1986, was named as the Attending Physician of the Year in 1986, and received a Governor's Commendation for Exemplary Service to the Department Public Safety from the State of Hawaii in 2004. Dr. Bauman has been highlighted in Best Doctors of America multiple times between 1998 and 2008 and has also been featured by Woodward/White and published in Honolulu Magazine.
