Darryl Lewis serves as the chief legal officer for Universal Property and Casualty Insurance Company.

Mr. Lewis serves as the chief legal officer for Universal Property and Casualty Insurance Company. Acquired in 2018, he is responsible for the oversight of the organization's entire legal department, which includes nearly 250 employees, of whom 50 are attorneys. As a tenured trial lawyer, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise with him to the insurance firm, as well as fresh eyes and a different perspective in regards to litigating cases. Among other responsibilities to his credit, Mr. Lewis ensures that all rules and regulations are being followed, and handles various legislative matters.
Deeply familiar with Universal Property and Casualty, Mr. Lewis has served on the board of directors since 2013. Founded in 1997, the firm has grown exponentially to serve 19 states throughout the country. During his three decades in legal service, Mr. Lewis clerked for the Federal Correctional Institute in Lexington, Kentucky and for the Honorable L.T. Grant of the Fayette County Circuit Court. Following this period, he secured a position with William N. Hutchinson Jr. PA. Mr. Lewis was subsequently named as the partner at Hutchinson & Lewis P.A. and was ultimately acquired by Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley PA, a prominent personal injury firm in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he spent 20 years and rose to become a shareholder.
A native of Kentucky, Mr. Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science in political science with the help of a scholarship at Kentucky State University in 1987, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence, with a Presidential Scholarship, from the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law in 1988. While attending college, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1986. In this capacity, Mr. Lewis gained more than 15 years of experience as a judge advocate general.
To better support his career, Mr. Lewis is a professional member of several industry-related organizations, including the Florida Bar, the American Association for Justice and, among others, the Florida chapter of the National Bar Association. Showcasing his achievements, he was named to the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association. He was also mentioned in Best Lawyers in America, in the South Florida Legal Guide as a preeminent trial lawyer, and in several other reputable leading law publications. Furthermore, Mr. Lewis received a U.S. Army Commendation Medal for his contributions in the military.
