ATLANTA, GA, March 01, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Sandra Bishop Sexson, MD, DFAACAP, DFAPA, FACPSYCH, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Sexson celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Accruing more than four decades of valuable expertise in her field, Dr. Sexson has earned acclaim as a professor of psychiatry and as the director of child psychiatry on behalf of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University since 2004. In this capacity, she was instrumental in establishing the Post Pediatric Portal Program, one of only four in the United States that allows fully-trained pediatricians to rapidly transition toward general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) training. Additionally, Dr. Sexson has been responsible for the integration of cultural and spiritual training in CAP fellowship programs, factors that exert a powerful influence on the development of children and adolescents.
Known for her professional longevity, Dr. Sexson previously served as the chief of the child and adolescent psychiatry department at both Wright State University and Emory University. Throughout the course of her career, she has steered her primary clinical and research interests toward the study of emotional issues in children and adolescents living with chronic medical illnesses, as well as psychiatric education. Well regarded as an authority in her field, Dr. Sexson has submitted more than 50 articles to various peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychiatric Clinics of North America and Academic Psychiatry, among many others. She also penned over 10 book chapters on behalf of works published by her professional contemporaries and served as an editor for "Child and Adolescent Psychiatry," a leading clinical textbook by Blackwell Publishing.
Dr. Sexson's performance in the field was born of her academic accomplishments, which initially took shape at the Mississippi State College for Women, later known as the Mississippi University for Women. Excelling at her studies, she graduated summa cum laude in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science and went on to attend the University of Mississippi School of Medicine (UMSOM), where she was inducted into the honorable society of Alpha Omega Alpha. After earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1971, she subsequently became an intern in pediatrics until 1972, whereupon she undertook a residency in general psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center from 1972 to 1974. Following this period, she went on to pursue fellowships in child development and psychiatry at UMSOM and at the Washington University School of Medicine, respectively. Dr. Sexson accepted her first role as an assistant professor of pediatric psychiatry at Wright State University in 1978.
As a commitment to her field, Dr. Sexson has been active with several industry-related organizations, particularly in roles of high leadership and responsibility. To wit, she served as the president of the American Association of Directors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Association of Directors for Psychiatric Residency Training, and the Georgia Council on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Likewise, she contributed her expertise as a CAP team leader for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the chair of the lifelong learning committee for the American Psychiatric Association, and the chair of the psychiatry residency review committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), among many other positions. Additionally, Dr. Sexson served as an ACGME consultant on behalf of international programs in both Singapore and Qatar.
To commemorate her myriad accomplishments, Dr. Sexson has accrued numerous accolades over the span of her professional journey. Among them, she received the Bowis Award from the American College of Psychiatrists, the Vestermark Psychiatry Educator Award through the American Psychiatric Association, and the Spirituality and Medicine Curricular Award from the Templeton Foundation. Likewise, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry bestowed upon her an Outstanding Mentor Award, the Virginia Q Anthony Women Leader of the Year Award, and the "Catcher in the Rye" award on four occasions, the latter of which she has received more than any individual, university, institution or organization. In addition, Dr. Sexson has been consistently recognized among America's Top Doctors, Best Doctors and Top Psychiatrists for almost two decades and has been lauded among the Top 1% of America's Most Honored Professionals. Most gratifying, however, has been her receipt of an award from the Atlanta chapter of the Black Psychiatrists of America for her work in mentoring young Black CAP practitioners, many of whom went on to serve in prestigious roles in their own right.
