Fascinated by the natural world, Mr. Hackman was driven to pursue a career in biology education. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Science Education from Mississippi State University, he began his professional journey as a science teacher with Callaway High School, where he first worked between 1983 and 1987. He is the adviser and sponsor for the Madison Central Ornithology Club and the MCHS Shine Bible Study. He and his students also did graduate level research work for 13 years on Henslow's Sparrows with LSU's School of Renewable and Natural Resources. He is a frequent speaker to civic clubs, garden clubs and educational institutions across the Deep South. He was honored to be a featured speaker at the Queensland Naturalists' Annual Conference in Australia in 2017.
In addition to his other numerous accolades, Mr. Hackman was honored as the Mississippi State Conservation Educator of the Year by both the Mississippi Wildlife Federation and the Mississippi Association of Conservation Districts, received the Metro Teacher of the Year Award through the Metro Jackson Chamber of Commerce and his classes won the first two National Schoolyard Birding Challenge Awards from the National Birding Educators' Network. He was also honored with the "Heart of a Lion Award," the Lions Club's highest honor for non-Lions members for his work in the community, and later became a member of the Madison Lions Club to help serve others.
