HOUSTON, TX, March 01, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sendurai A. Mani, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on the current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.

Dr. Mani is a professor, researcher, and expert in cancer metastasis. He is affiliated with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as a tenured professor in the department of translational molecular pathology and as the co-director of the Center for Stem Cell and Developmental Biology and co-director of the Metastasis Research Center. In addition to his primary appointment at the University of Texas, Dr. Mani has been an adjunct professor in the department of molecular and cellular biology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

Dr. Mani was also a founder of Iylon Precision Oncology in 2021. He is passionate about making precision medicine available to all patients by combining the clinical, pathological and genomic disciplines to bring personalized care to cancer patients. Dr. Mani, a seasoned researcher, is also committed to investigating ways to target cancer stem cells responsible for developing metastasis and chemoresistance.

Dr. Mani's laboratory is also involved in investigating the biology of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). It has been known that when cancer cells leave the primary site and develop metastasis, it histopathologically appears similar to the primary tumor. During his many years of study, Dr. Mani was the first to demonstrate that cancer can produce its stem cells by reactivating embryonic EMT. This revolutionary discovery explained how the tumor cells could develop metastasis, histopathologically similar to the tissue of origin. It proved how activating the EMT and becoming stem cells help escape the immune system, thus creating new tumors at the metastatic site. This work has been cited over 8800 times based on Google Scholar. Only a handful of original research articles achieve this kind of citation in science, and he continues to exert a considerable impact in oncology.

Dr. Mani has secured multiple grants in support of his work and currently holds five patents, with several more pending. He has presented numerous times at various professional conferences, published numerous scholarly journal articles, and served on the editorial boards for several professional publications. Dr. Mani is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a lifetime member of the honorable society of Sigma Xi.

Civically engaged, Dr. Mani was responsible for founding the Sakthi Foundation in 1998, a nonprofit organization that is headquartered in Fairfield, Iowa, and serves to establish unity throughout the world. He is also the founder of the Sakthi School in his home country of India. To support his professional career, Dr. Mani is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Association of Immunologists and the American Society for Cell Biology.

Dr. Mani studied at Madurai Kamaraj University in India, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science. He subsequently acquired a Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Biology at the Indian Institute of Science, a premier research and education institute in India. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer biology under the tutelage of Prof. Robert A. Weinberg at the Whitehead Institute/Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prof. Weinberg, a pioneer in cancer biology, who discovered the first oncogene and the first tumor suppressor gene, was the first to genetically engineer and make cancer cells in a lab. For his subsequent accomplishments, Dr. Mani has been recognized with such accolades as a Jimmy V Foundation V-Scholar Award and an American Cancer Society's Research Scholar Award.
