Ms. Hertel earned a master's degree, with honors, from Wichita State University in 2001 and went on to attain certifications as a registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse. A nurse practitioner specialist, she works for the State of Kansas and primarily for Larned State Hospital. An expert in psychiatric nursing, she prides herself on being available for her colleagues whenever they are short-staffed or require assistance. She is also especially proud of serving as the chief nursing officer on three occasions for a staff of nearly 400 individuals.

Ms. Hertel became involved in her profession because she has always been interested in the medical field. Starting her career as an emergency medical technician, she decided she wanted to become more involved with patient care go further into medicine. Looking toward the future, Ms. Hertel is looking forward to a well-deserved retirement to spend more time with her family.
