As a foster parent at the Jane Addams Hull House, she supervises the needs of her children on a daily basis and ensures their basic needs are met. Ms. Gillaird's operations include making breakfast for the children, accompanying them to school, assisting with homework, and assigning activities to keep their minds sharp and focused.
Before venturing onto her vocational path, Ms. Gillaird completed coursework in job development at the Olive-Harvey City Colleges of Chicago. After realizing that she wanted to combine her love for social service with working with children, she decided that she would become a foster parent. In this vein, Ms. Gillaird joined a pilot program to become a professional foster parent, through which she regularly accepted groups of siblings.
Now, she is stimulating the minds of four year old children at a learning center in Texas preparing them for kindergarten. Ms. Gillaird's latest position augments her more than 20 years of experience in fostering 35 children, many of whom she has remained in contact with and are still considered as part of her family. Her achievements have largely been driven by her desire to help people in whatever way she can, and she has instilled that value deep within the core of her being. Looking toward the future, Ms. Gillaird would like to return to her college studies and finish her bachelor's degree.
