After earning a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's College in New York during the early 1980s, Ms. Burwell gained valuable expertise in the field as a nurse supervisor and an assistant director of nursing at Massapequa General Hospital followed by Mount Sinai South Nassau. Backed by her considerable industry knowledge, she most recently served as director of nursing for Mount Sinai South Nassau for six years before retiring in 2014. During her time as an executive nurse, she maintained and wrote policies, procedures and proper practices, oversaw staffing matters and daily nursing operations and interpreted various New York State laws in order to write them into practice.
Throughout her career, Ms. Burwell has expanded upon her professional expertise, earning a Master of Public Administration from Walden University in 2007. In order to stay abreast of changes in the field, she aligns herself with the American Nurses Association, Chi Eta Phi Sorority of Kappa Eta, Incorporated, the American Heart Association and the Diabetes Association. Alongside her work in nursing, she also served her community as a writing instructor for seniors at her local church and by taking blood pressures in her community.
Due to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Burwell was recognized in Strathmore's Who's Who in 2002 and earned the Florence Nightingale Award through Mount Sinai South Nassau. Among her career highlights, she is proudest of being the first African American nursing director at Mount Sinai. She is also honored to be the first African American assistant director of nursing for other health institutions. Ms. Burwell also authored and published three professional articles in a nursing publication in the early 2000's. She is also the recipient of the Service for Humanity Award given by Kappa Eta Chapter, Inc. in 2013.
