She also works with those who have experienced war trauma, domestic violence, sexual abuse, religious trauma and other traumatic experiences that have deeply affected their mental health and wellbeing. She enjoys working with individuals, couples and families. Forming her clinic with the hope of raising the morale of both clients and her staff, Ms. Ahrens is also working to de-stigmatize mental health and disrupt current attitudes and approaches to treating mental health disorders.
Having garnered recognition as a leader in the mental health sector, Ms. Ahrens' inspiration for forming her clinic stems from her tenacity and personal vision for creating a culture that is driven by responsive, accessible and results-driven care, and at the same time allowing her team to provide meaningful clinical work and achieve a healthy work/life balance. She has worked for several nonprofit agencies and private organizations in years past, assisting individuals during times of crisis and helping them Overcome a variety of challenges. She has held several leadership roles one of which was for Anthem Blue Cross where she became a Threat Assessment Expert Consultant, assisting employers and employees assess and mitigate threats and safety issues in the workplace. She was a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) where she held a government clearance working alongside ICE officers (US Immigration and Custom Enforcement) to help refugees seeking asylum in the U.S. Ms. Ahrens also served as a Manager for Women Escaping a Violent Environment, a highly regarded domestic violence non-profit agency in Sacramento, CA where she oversaw a domestic violence hotline. Similarly, in San Diego, Ms. Ahrens managed a domestic violence shelter for another highly reputable non-profit, Center for Community Solutions.
As an extension of her passion and work, Ms. Ahrens established Papillon Wellness, Inc. in 2020, a nonprofit organization aimed at serving the uninsured, underinsured and middle income adults who often fall between the cracks of mental health care. Papillon is pioneering advances in the mental health field throughout the San Diego area. She is currently focused on fundraising and outreach efforts that can serve as many people throughout the community as possible. Ms. Ahrens also serves as the creator and host of Get Mental Radio, which is now a Podcast. Get Mental was created as a result of the deep pain and anger she felt following the emergence of the epidemic of school shootings in America.
Well regarded for her accomplishments, Ms. Ahrens has been featured in a multitude of professional publications, including Vogue, Parents and Business Insider. She was also highlighted in a 2021 article of USA Today, titled 'The Importance of Finding a Good Therapist and Why It's So Difficult.' Additionally, Ms. Ahrens has been featured in PBS NewsHour, YahooLife, Very Well Mind, Theravive, CMAJ, ShoutOut SoCal and SD Voyager. She has also been a guest at several radio shows and podcasts including The Answer San Diego, K-Praise and The Scope of Practice among others.
Born in the Philippines where she experienced a life of both privilege and poverty, Ms. Ahrens moved to Australia when she was 17. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Queensland before relocating to the U.S. in 2000. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified EMDR-Therapist (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Ms. Ahrens is likewise a member of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association (EMDRlA), the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
