As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Newell has drawn deeply from the influence of his father, Alton Newell, who invented the modern automobile and scrap metal shredder in the early 1960s. For more than 60 years, Scott has developed a reputation for his achievements in the design, manufacture and operation of shredding plants. In 2015, he began collaborating with his son, Scott III, by forming Newell Recycling Equipment LLC in El Paso, Texas. As the chairman and chief executive officer, Scott Newell supports the various management, sales and engineering operations of the business.
As an extension of his professional journey, Mr. Newell is the vice chairman of China Recycling Newell Equipment Ltd., which serves as a manufacturer for all types of shredding and separation equipment at its overseas location. He is also the executive vice president of Last Step Recycling, which processes automotive shredder residue to capture various metals, which are then used to manufacture automobiles, appliances and other equipment. In July 2021, Last Step Recycling broke ground by adding a facility at Chester Technology Park in Chester County, South Carolina, which helped create more than 50 new jobs.
Mr. Newell has lent his expertise on the national board of directors of the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel and its predecessor. He is currently listed with Expert Engine as an expert witness in legal matters and matters that require consulting. A widely published writer, Mr. Newell has authored more than 100 technical papers and has presented to steel makers and scrap processors at numerous national and international conferences.
An advocate on behalf of his community, Mr. Newell is a former trustee of the Baptist Memorial Hospital System in San Antonio. He also served in the same capacity for the Mission Road Foundation for Handicapped Children. Professionally, Mr. Newell has been a prominent member and officer of the Ferrous division and member of the shredder committees of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.
Despite not earning a degree, Mr. Newell completed coursework at Baylor University, Trinity University and Arizona State University. Joining the workforce due to demands of the family business, he spent six years as a manager for Newell Salvage Company in Phoenix from 1959 to 1965. During that time, Mr. Newell continued to study by correspondence, where he studied law for a year. He also completed courses in welding and mechanics to broaden his expertise. In 2015, he was honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries for his contributions to the field. The Newell Shredder was also recognized as a National Historical Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1994.
