Allen E. Schuele Explores His Fascination in Engineering and Inspection Services

For more than 40 years, Allen E. Schuele has provided a wide range of engineering and inspection services to the process industry—whether he's writing reports, conducting inspections, doing field work, or consulting—and advanced in his ranks through a strong work ethic and an innate desire to always improve himself.

Mr. Schuele earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and sciences from the College of Emporia in 1984 before embarking on his professional journey. In the midst of his career, he has obtained numerous certifications, including those in authorized pressure vessel inspection; authorized aboveground tank inspection; corrosion; welding; piping; and ultrasonics, among others. In addition, his knowledge of industry standards encompasses the federal and state regulations and the American Petroleum Institute and American Society of Mechanical Engineers codes. A dedicated worker who has strived to be the best at what he does, he has advanced in the field to become a lead inspector and administrator for several top engineering firms. From 1995 to 2001, he found success as the eastern regional manager for Corrpro Companies, Inc., where he oversaw and managed the inspection and testing of energy industry equipment out of a budget of $5 million.

Following this appointment, Mr. Schuele became a technical manager at Thielsch Engineering, a role that saw him overseeing technicians, reporting reviews, writing procedures, leading projects, utilizing test equipment, and conducting audits of personnel from 2001 to 2005. He then advanced to lead inspector at Structural Integrity, which is where he became a master of the inspection protocol of Guided Wave Ultrasonics, a nondestructive technique that uses sound waves to detect corrosion on hard-to-reach piping; this would become an area of expertise for him. In 2009, he assumed an inspector position at Mistras Group, Inc. and remained there until 2014 before serving as a senior group manager at TeamQualSpec. From 2018 to 2019, he excelled as the Guided Wave Group Manager at OES Asset Integrity Management—on top of his primary leadership tasks, he conducted guided wave testing on pipeline and piping systems for refineries and power plants. Since 2019, Mr. Schuele has found success as the Corporate Level III and Guided Wave Group lead inspector with AES Non-Destructive Testing Services, a role through which he provides such inspection protocols as Guided Wave, Ultrasonic, Liquid Penetrant, and Magnetic Particles for the natural gas pipeline, petrochemical, and nuclear and fossil power industries.

Over the course of his career, he has accrued experience in performing inspections on pressure equipment, piping systems, storage tanks, naval ships, and oil tankers. His prominence in the field has also led him to help with the design of alterations and repair protocols; he has developed, implemented, and provided customer-focused mechanical integrity programs, inspection programs, and PSM programs that highlight the requirement for quality and customer service. In addition, he has been integral in establishing Data Management Systems utilized for risk-based inspection protocols and compliance issues.

Outside of his many roles in the field, Mr. Schuele has also provided expert witness testimony for many cases in California and Louisiana, written several national standards for the American Society for Testing and Materials—which he considers the highlight of his career, and contributed technical review for the first edition of "The Nondestructive Testing Handbook: Visual and Optical Testing," among other texts. He is a dedicated member of the E7 Committee on Nondestructive Testing, with a special emphasis on guided wave testing, ultrasonic testing, and E36 accreditation and certification, as well as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Welding Society, American Society of Nondestructive Testing, ASM International, and NACE International.

As of 2021, Mr. Schuele has obtained a foundational degree in applied science from the University of Northampton in England and plans retire from his current position in the next five years, at which point he will focus more on consulting for different clients. In speaking to the next generation of professionals, he advised how important it is to not being afraid to make mistakes. "Regardless of blunders," he said, "Never give up on broadening [your] views." Married for more than 30 years and the proud father of a nuclear engineer and an electrical engineer, both of whom served in the Army, Mr. Schuele hopes to be remembered for his expertise and attention to detail.
