Synthia Smith is the founder and Executive Director of Sisters of Nia, Inc., a nonprofit organization which seeks to empower socially and economically disadvantaged adolescent girls.

Ms. Smith is the founder and Executive Director of Sisters of Nia, Inc., a nonprofit organization which seeks to empower socially and economically disadvantaged adolescent girls by providing cultural and educational programs designed to instill strong social skills, leadership development, and academic excellence in our young ladies. The mission of the organization is to inspire, encourage, and empower girls to reach their fullest potential and live their life with a purpose.
Synthia and her staff have been working closely with middle school girls in grades six-eight, teaching them how to live to their fullest potential with confidence. In this position, she has been fostering relationship-based, reflective preventions and interventions for youth and their families. In addition to providing activities that support social and emotional development, she facilitates family participation in life planning, researches various mental health programs and services, establishes community partnerships and serves as a liaison with families, school personnel, mental health programs and community organizations, among other responsibilities. Having suffered from low self-esteem and low self-confidence in her youth, Ms. Smith seeks to promote change through her organization.
Synthia is a former teacher of over 20 years and is currently a high school counselor at Highlands Community Charter School; she also taught Intro to Human Services with Los Rios Community Colleges at American River College. In addition, Synthia worked as a student-teacher supervisor with Fortune School. She is further affiliated with the Sacramento chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. In the coming years, Ms. Smith aims to expand her program on a national level while also securing additional grants to support her efforts.
Ms. Smith initially earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on Early Childhood Studies from California State University. She also obtained a Master of Science in Human Services with a concentration in Counseling Studies from Capella University. Synthia was celebrated by the California Legislative Assembly in 2014, 2016 and 2018, she also received a Peace Building Award in 2016 from the Center for African Peace & Conflict Resolution at CSU Sacramento, and a Recognition Award from the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce in 2019. Ms. Smith was likewise honored as a grand prize winner and the audience favorite at the "Reinvented" competition at Sacramento State University in 2017.
