For more than 25 years, Mr. William "Skip" Black has found success in the field of social work, first as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor then as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker focusing on substance abuse and mental health. Prior to retirement in 2021, he served as a Senior Social Worker in the Behavioral Health Division of the U.S. Department of Defense, where he specialized in helping active duty military personnel and civilians recover from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse. Mr. Black previously worked as a School Social Worker at Red Wing High School in Red Wing, Minnesota, for more than 10 years before his recruitment by the U.S. Department of Defense in 2009. Along with his responsibilities as a School Social Worker, Mr. Black excelled as the first African American to serve on the Goodhue County Board.
Mr. Black began his career in the mental health field as an Assistant Substance Abuse Counselor for Mounds Park Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota and gradually advanced to become a Senior Counselor prior to his appointment as a Substance Abuse Therapist and Case Manager of United Behavioral Health Insurance. In order to remain aware of the latest trends and developments in his field, Mr. Black maintained his affiliation with the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and the National Association for Social Workers.
In recognition of his exemplary career with the U.S. Department of Defense, Mr. Black has been honored with numerous accolades on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Army, such as the Civilian Service Commendation Medal, the Commander's Award for Civilian Service and the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service. Mr. Black attributes a great deal of his success to the values from his childhood including the importance of helping others. In the coming years Mr. Black will be enjoying his retirement with his favorite pastimes of riding motorcycles, woodworking, grilling and watching cowboy movies.
