Edward Hairston was born November 21, 1948 as the seventh child from a family of eight to the late C. P. and Mary L. Hairston.
He attended the public schools of Pittsylvania County, Virginia and went to Virginia State University where he earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education. He graduated "With Distinction" with all A's his senior year. He was the senior class president and received a ROTC commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S Army. He served on active duty between 1970 and 1972 before serving another eight years as a reservist at the 422nd Civil Affairs Unit in Greensboro, NC.
After spending two years on active duty, he began his career as a supervisor for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Danville, VA. Later he joined Philip Morris Tobacco Company where he was a supervisor in the manufacturing center, in Richmond, VA. He was selected to become a leaf buyer and did extensive travel to tobacco growing areas of the U.S as well as Italy, Canada, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland, and Venezuela.
Ed, as his friends call him, decided to help his brother C.G., who owned the Volvo and Fiat franchise in Danville, by starting in sales and moved to General Manager. Upon competing in a national sales event for Volvo, he decided to pursue the life insurance business in December of 1995 where he has been an independent agent since.
Mr. Hairston, of Hairston Insurance Agency, founded his firm in Danville, Virginia, in 2005. Serving all of Virginia and North Carolina, he helps prepare clients for their financial future by providing them with the best available options with regard to life insurance, dental and vision plans, and Medicare supplements and Medicare advantage plans. He also focuses his business on retaining his clients' retirement portfolio gains, setting them up for a more comfortable and stable retirement.

He is past Vice Commander of American Legion Post 29, and has served on the Pittsylvania County School Board, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Board, Deacon Board, Sunday School Supt., Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc (Pi Phi Sigma Alumni Chapter Danville, VA) and Past member of the Board for Piedmont Credit Union, a Member of West Piedmont Planning District, and a treasury council member for the Group of the Divine Nine. He has an A rating with the Better Business Bureau.
Recognized for his work, Mr. Hairston won a Clyde Banks Award from the NAACP in 2012. He was also honored for his time in military service with a Service Ribbon and he received a Reserve Association Award from the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
Ed is married to his college sweetheart, Vernetta, and they have two sons, Jerond and Jarrett as well as three grandchildren. In his spare time, he likes reading, bowling, chess, watching documentaries and working with and encouraging young people.
