After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from Mississippi Valley State University and a diploma in nursing from Methodist Hospital's School of Nursing, Dr. Holmes began her career as a staff nurse in the GI/Medical-Surgical Unit at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. She went on to work as a staff nurse at UT Bowld Hospital, where she also served as a nurse specialist in the Gastroenterology Diagnostic Lab. After she received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Memphis State University, she worked in varying positions with UT Bowld, including advanced nurse clinician, assistant head nurse and nurse specialist.
Driven by her desire to support nursing education and professional development, Dr. Holmes began as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Nursing at Shelby State Community College. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1999 and went on to complete her PhD there in 2007. Between 2000 and 2021, she gained valuable expertise in nursing through clinical, academic, and executive roles in the US and internationally including working for UT Bowld Hospital, Methodist University Hospital, Cabell Huntington Hospital, Ohio University School of Nursing, Kentucky State University School of Nursing, University of Louisville College of Nursing, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University College of Nursing, King Saud Medical City, and Jubail General Hospital.
Backed by her considerable knowledge, Dr. Holmes excels today as nursing researcher with King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam, in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, she has earned a number of certifications over the years, including evidence-based practice, nursing professional development, healthcare quality professional, healthcare simulation and more. She also aligns herself with several organizations including the American Nurses Association, the National Black Nurses Association, Association of Clinical Research Professionals, the Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders, the Society of Trauma Nurses, the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety, the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Association of Neurosciences Nurses, just to name a few.
Alongside her work, Dr. Holmes continues her public service through working with various social, health-related, and philanthropic societies. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Arabian Gulf Alumnae Chapter, where she serves on the Physical and Mental Health and Policy and Procedures Committees. Professionally, she has reviewed articles for such publications as the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, the International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences and the International Wound Journal. In light of her outstanding body of work, she has won several awards, including the Daisy Nurse Leader Award through King Saud Medical City, the Outstanding Nurse Award through the Kyanna Black Nurses Association, the Large Research Award through Sigma Theta Tau and the Black Student Award through The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Looking ahead, Dr. Holmes intends to experience the continued growth and success of her career.
