KAMUELA, HI, March 25, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert M. Appleman, MD, FACS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Having led a multifaceted career for numerous decades in health care, civic engagement and military service, Dr. Appleman has most recently excelled as a fine watercolor artist. During the earliest stages of his career, however, he served in private practice as a general surgeon before his drafting into the United States Army in 1965. After securing a transfer to the United States Navy, he took several months to conclude his hospital commitments before appearing for flight surgery classes at Pensacola, Florida, in 1967. Upon graduation, he was conferred the rank of a lieutenant commander due to his previous education at the University of Michigan (where he was a track & field athlete and won the Outdoor Big Ten Championship in pole vault in 1955). He was assigned as a senior medical officer to the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge, where he rose to the rank of a commander. Following his discharge in 1969, Dr. Appleman returned to California and reopened his general surgery practice, through which he remained active on behalf of patients until 1995.
From 1995 to 2002, Dr. Appleman worked on behalf of Sacramento County as a disability claims evaluator for local employees, during which time he is proud to have saved the county millions of dollars in claims. Due to the part-time nature of this work, he took advantage of his extra free time by enrolling in art classes at Sacramento City College and Cosumnes River College, where he experimented with a variety of artistic mediums, including drawing, painting, clay sculpture and print making. After settling on watercolor painting as his primary medium, Dr. Appleman and his wife relocated to Hawaii in 2003, where he frequently traveled to different locales around the Big Island to draw and paint in the plein air style.
Over the span of his career, Dr. Appleman harbored a deep and abiding interest in artistic expression, which initially took root during his early education. Emphasizing his commitment to creative pursuits, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago as a young teenager, where he learned to draw still lifes. From the mid-1990s onward, he undertook figure drawing and portraits and, in 1999, attended his first meeting with the Portrait Society of America in Reston, Virginia, which would later ask him to become their ambassador to the state of Hawaii. Additionally, beginning in 2012, Dr. Appleman accepted a role as an artist-in-residence at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, where he and his wife had vacationed yearly since 1972. When his beach scene paintings attracted the attention of the hotel management, he was asked to serve in his current role, through which he continues to display and paint every Wednesday.
Dr. Appleman's performance in the field was born of his academic journey, which began at the University of Chicago, shortly after graduating from high school at the age of 15. After two years of coursework, he attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in pre-medical studies in 1957, a Master of Science in surgery from the University of Minnesota in 1966, and a Doctor of Medicine in 1959. He subsequently undertook a medical internship at what is now the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis during that same year and pursued a residency with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, from 1960 to 1964. Though Dr. Appleman was extended a public health grant to pursue a career in laboratory science, he proceeded to open his general practice in Sacramento.
Among his vocational accomplishments, Dr. Appleman is particularly proud to have sold his first painting at his first art exhibition in 1994, a feat that drew surprise from many of his colleagues. He continued to display his work in local shows throughout the course of the 1990s and, after moving to Hawaii, featured his art on many more occasions. In this capacity, Dr. Appleman won recognition as the Best in the Show at the Watercolor Plein Air Painters Show at the Kahilu Theater. Looking toward the future, he aspires to distinguish himself as an artist for the rest of his life and strive for better and more interesting paintings for as long as he is able.
