Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Johnson obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science at Northwestern University in 1981. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in humanities from the Wisconsin University of Theology in Milwaukee. Furthermore, Mr. Johnson undertook coursework for a Master of Public Administration program at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
A lifelong resident of Milwaukee, Mr. Johnson serves as an elected official as the 13th District Supervisor in the Milwaukee Board of Supervisors, a position he has held since 2000. The board is the legislative branch of the government of Milwaukee County and votes on various county issues, including the budget. Prior to his election to the board, Mr. Johnson excelled in the Milwaukee County Department of Human Services Financial Assistance and Child Welfare divisions.
Additionally, Mr. Johnson has flourished as a board member of Neighborhood Housing Services' Neighborworks of Milwaukee, Economics Wisconsin, the Three Harbors Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Milwaukee Innercity Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) and the Milwaukee County Historical Society. Additionally, he has made an impact as the chairman of the Learning for Life Committee and Three Harbors Council and as a task group member of Housing Opportunity Partnership for Southeastern Wisconsin.
In 2005, Milwaukee Innercity Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) bestowed Mr. Johnson with its "To Do What Is Just" award, which is given to individuals who strive to assure various community benefits, such as affordable housing and living wages.
Additionally, in 2008, the Wisconsin Minority Business Opportunities Committee cited him with a recognition for outstanding service from 2003 to 2007. Mr. Johnson's other accolades include a Civil Rights Partnership Award from the Federal Highway Administration in 2008, a Secretary's Golden Shovel Award from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in 2010 and a Minority Small Business Champion Award from the United States Small Business Administration in 2015.
Mr. Johnson serves proudly on the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council. Likewise, he is a Diamond Life Member in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and has maintained involvement with the Milwaukee Urban League, 100 Black Men of Greater Milwaukee, the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, the National Association of Black County Officials, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Museum of African American History. Furthermore, Mr. Johnson sits on the stakeholder advisory committee with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Disadvantaged Business Enterprise.
