After 36 years in the classroom, Ms. Hicks retired from public school education in 2003. Hired by Carlton Palmore Elementary School in Lakeland, Florida, she spent her entire career in this capacity, serving as an inspirational teacher, role model and mentor to both students and faculty. During the course of her tenure, Ms. Hicks' main specialization resided in the subjects of reading, writing and mathematics.
Apart from her paid position in education, Ms. Hicks has been devoted to her alma mater as a President of the Polk County, Florida, alumni chapter of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) for 29 years. She was instrumental in raising over $200,000 to support scholarships, university programs and various projects. Furthermore, Ms. Hicks was later recognized with an award for her contributions.
Ms. Hicks earned a Master of Arts in education from FAMU in 1970. She is a longstanding member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Over the years, she was recognized for her accomplishments with many accolades in the fields of education and community service and with inclusion in a local newspaper, which highlighted her success and tenure in the field of education. The mayor presented Ms. Hicks with a key to the City of Lakeland in 2020.
In 2020, Ms. Hicks received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Alumni Association at FAMU. She was also among the first class representing her Alma Mater FAMU to receive the inaugural 1890 Universities Career Exemplar Award of Public and Land-Grant Universities. More recently, in December 2021, she was honored with a Certificate of Congratulations from the African American Historical Museum of Lakeland, which recognized her many years of dedication in providing scholarships to students.
