After receiving a Bachelor of Science from Wilhem's College in 1962, Dr. Westenfelder earned a Doctor of Medicine in biochemistry from University Kiel-Luebeck in 1968, and completed internships through University Hospital in Berlin and Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He subsequently finished a residency in medicine and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Illinois. Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Westenfelder began as an assistant professor of medicine at the University, where he later served as the director of the Dialysis Center.
Throughout much of his career, Dr. Westenfelder has gained valuable expertise in the medical and educational sectors as an associate professor of medicine and professor of medicine and physiology at the University of Utah, as well as the chief of the nephrology at the university-affiliated VA Medical Center. Supported by his considerable expertise, as well as his unique ability to utilize a scientific approach for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex diseases, he presently excels as the owner of SymbioCellTech LLC. In this capacity, Dr. Westenfelder works closely with the National lnstitute of Health, the University of California San Diego, the University of Alabama, Birmingham and the Mayo Clinic.
With SymbioCellTech, Dr. Westenfelder has developed a highly competitive new technology that is enabled by the use of stem cells, and aims to cure Type 1 Diabetes. Alongside his work with the company, he serves as a professor emeritus for the University of Utah. A diplomate through the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Nephrology, Dr. Westenfelder remains affiliated with the American College of Physicians and the International Society of Nephrology.
