Specializing in the treatment of substance abuse, he has served as the medical director of the Substance Abuse Treatment Center at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington since 1992. He is also the medical director of the Howard Center Chittenden Clinic in South Burlington, the largest mental health organization in the state of Vermont, which focuses on treating those living with an opioid use disorder.
Additionally, Dr. Brooklyn serves in a similar capacity on behalf of the Bay Area Addiction Research and Treatment (BAART), an affiliate program of a Texas-based organization that administrates opioid treatment initiatives in various states throughout the country. In this role, he has personally established and managed all four BAART clinics in the towns of Berlin, Newport, Saint Albans and Saint Johnsbury.
Outside of his contributions in the field, Dr. Brooklyn serves as a tenured clinical assistant professor of family medicine and psychiatry at the Robert Larner, MD, College of Medicine at his alma mater, the University of Vermont. He also educates doctors, residents and students on opioid use disorder and buprenorphine, which is an opioid medication used to treat opioid use disorder, acute pain, and chronic pain. Aiming to break barriers, Dr. Brooklyn aspires to increase the availability of treatment with the assistance of several advancements in technology, including methadone.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Brooklyn established the Hub and Spoke model, which has garnered renown for integrating opioid treatment into primary care. It is currently being practiced nationwide and is considered a gold standard for treatment. As a respected researcher, Dr. Brooklyn has also published dozens of articles in prominent professional journals on the topics of opioids and substance abuse, including the Journal of Addiction Medicine and the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Brooklyn earned a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at the University of Vermont in 1979. Continuing his studies, he completed a Doctor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University in 1989, followed by a residency in family medicine at the University of Vermont in 1992. Commemorated for his subsequent success, Dr. Brooklyn received the prestigious Nyswander/Dole 'Marie' Award from the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence Inc. in 2019 for his work in opioid treatment. He was also named as the Medicine Doctor of the Year, earned a Circle of Star Award from a local addiction center, was featured in the Medical Alumni Journal of the University of Vermont, and was highlighted in various other professional publications and podcasts.
