Drawing on over four decades of expertise, Dr. Scott has found much success as a music director and educator. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, he attended the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York Potsdam, where he earned a bachelor's degree in music education in 1979. He continued his academic efforts at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington, obtaining a master's degree in jazz studies in 1988, and attaining a Doctor of Philosophy in music education from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2007. Dr. Scott has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Association for Music Education, International Association for Jazz Education and the Minnesota Music Educators Association.
Serving by his motto, "share what you learn," Dr. Scott has built a prolific career as a music educator and the director of orchestras in the Bloomington public school district, at John F. Kennedy High School and currently at Two Rivers High School in Mendota Heights. In this capacity, he directs the orchestras, teaches guitar for beginners and the advanced placement level of music theory to students in grades nine through twelve. Outside of his main professional path, he is an active freelance musician (on tenor and bass trombone) and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Civic Symphony, at such venues as the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and the Target Center. He has also toured nationally with Perry Como, the Four Tops and the Temptations. Dr. Scott has participated as an artist and an adjudicator for various musical competitions throughout the Midwest, as well as a guest conductor with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra, the Southeast Minnesota Honor Band, the St. Paul All-High School Honor Band, St. Paul All-High School Honor Orchestra at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, the Minnesota Symphonic Winds, the Plymouth Community Concert Band and the Concertino Northeast Orchestra of the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies at Orchestra Hall. Dr. Scott plays bass trombone with the KC Gospel Orchestra, a Christian big band and also serves as music director of the Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band, a community band comprised of approximately 80 adult musicians.
In his career related endeavors, Dr. Scott has served as a senior editor and author of the jazz and popular music entries in the Minnesota Department of Education's "Minnesota Frameworks in Arts Curriculum Strategies Project," and has authored several biographies in the "Macmillan Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History," including those of Count Basie, Cab Calloway and Marvin Gaye. Among his professional accomplishments, he is most proud to have earned his doctorate degree. He attributes much of his success to his mother, who motivated him and his three siblings to persevere and aim for greatness through education. Looking toward the future, Dr. Scott aspires to continue conducting and perform more music upon retirement.
