Now retired, Dr. Edelson enjoyed a 35-year career at the University of Pennsylvania in the Perelman School of Medicine. Hired in 1964, she quickly advanced into the role of the professor of radiation oncology, in which she taught and conducted extensive research in her field. She also had a secondary faculty appointment at the School of Veterinary Medicine. Concluding her career as a professor emerita in 1999, Dr. Edelson cemented her legacy on campus for her extraordinary contributions to the department and the industry at large.
Dr. Edelson was a seasoned researcher who was the primary investigator in the discovery of DNA in mitochondria, which she carried out during her tenure of two international fellowship awards at Stockholm University. Dr. Edelson published her first of many peer-reviewed articles on this topic in 1962, in Experimental Cell Research. Continued studies of the advances, issues and goals of mitochondrial DNA were published in a 1969 edition of Science, only five years after joining the University of Pennsylvania. Becoming widely read, the article also became available on the JSTOR digital library. To support her professional career, Dr. Edelson has been a member of the American Cancer Society and the American Society of Biological Chemists.
Proud of her many achievements in the field, Dr. Edelson was acknowledged as one of the earliest female researchers to contribute to her field during a time when they were not given enough recognition for their contributions. Due to her early success, she garnered the respect of her peers and the necessary confidence to continue pursuing her research. Dr. Edelson notes her biggest secret to success was always approaching science with a big picture in mind, which constantly motivated her to continue her studies.
Dr. Edelson initially earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in only two years at Columbia University, after completing a superior high school education that provided college-level credits in science. Encouraged by one of her undergraduate professors, she was determined to pursue a career that involved both science and education. Dr. Edelson further earned her Master of Arts, and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961.
