LA JOLLA, CA, April 06, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Denise Kalmaz, MD has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Kalmaz earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 and went on to attain a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center in 2002 where she received Alpha Omega Alpha Honor distinction. Following graduation, she then undertook a residency in internal medicine at the University of California Los Angeles in 2002 and then a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of California San Diego in 2005. She completed her medical training in 2008, holds a medical license in the State of California and is board certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Kalmaz serves as Clinical Professor at the University of California San Diego and Program Director for the university's gastroenterology training program. In these roles, she covers diseases of the stomach, small intestine, colon and esophagus. She performs upper endoscopies and colonoscopies for patients, as well as more specialized procedures such as double balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy. Likewise, she teaches medical students, residents and fellows. In recognition of her work, she has received teaching awards from the internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship programs. Although she has experienced many career highlights, she is especially proud of her involvement in the fellowship program for the past 14 years.
In addition to her primary responsibilities, Dr. Kalmaz was involved in creating the national practice guidelines for the evaluation of iron deficiency anemia through the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) which were published in the high impact journal Gastroenterology. She was also named as Fellow of the AGA. She is the current President of the San Diego GI Society and serves on the Board of Governors. She was also elected to the Academy of Clinician Scholars. Furthermore, she participates in the Health Sciences International Program and mentors physicians from other countries seeking to complete their medical training in the United States.
Dr. Kalmaz credits her success to the strong mentorship she received early in her career. As such, she intends to provide mentorship to the next generation. Looking toward the future, she plans to continue working at the University of California San Diego, as she enjoys teaching, mentoring, and caring for patients in a tertiary care medical center.
