While working at a food plant in college, Mr. Jakana earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at El Paso in 1976. Upon graduating, he began his career in a corporate setting before deciding to return to academia for his master's degree. In 1979, he obtained a Master of Business Administration in international business from Oral Roberts Graduate School of Business. During his studies for his graduate degree, he conducted his thesis on agro-processing due to his East African homeland connections and travels around South America. He continued to work in corporate America for the next twelve plus years polishing up on his international business tools.
Drawing on his considerable knowledge, Mr. Jakana returned to his place of birth and founded Jakana Foods LLC, in 1994, an agro-processing company that focuses on adding value to agro-produce. He has been the CEO since the firm's inception. His inputs are sourced from Uganda and the surrounding environs, processed then exported to Europe and North America; some are also availed to the local market. After recently retiring he hired an American lady from New York to run his business who has expanded his enterprise due to her connections in North America, the EU and the Mid-East. Mr. Jakana has recently ventured into property development and his recent projects are Jakana Heights, a luxury condominium project, and Jakana Villas, both located in Kampala, Uganda.
In light of his outstanding body of work, Mr. Jakana earned a Presidential Award from Uganda in 2003 and in 2005 recognition from the African Development Foundation based in Washington, D.C. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, he is incredibly proud of introducing unique items into the market and bringing a new dimension by processing, adding value and shipping food items like dry fruits, fruit pulp, vegetarian meatless products and banana fiber (which can be used to make textile, paper, hair extensions, etc.) Looking ahead, Mr. Jakana intends to help new businesses by providing consulting services.
