NEW YORK, NY, April 20, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sheba Michiyo Shibahara has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Shibahara earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Musashi University, Tokyo in 1980. She went on to attain an ESL (English as a second language) advanced certificate from London University Technical College in 1987. She began her career as a copywriter and editor for several large advertising agencies in Japan and continues to write as a freelance journalist on the subjects of Japanese art and culture. She immigrated to the United States in 1988 and in 1990 became the director for the Japanese Cultural Exchange, a not-for-profit corporation in New York City. She has since advanced her position to become the executive director thereof. During her ongoing tenure with the Japanese Cultural Exchange, she was engaged as an investigative assistant with Hashi Research Consultants, Inc. from 1993 to 2012. Using her research and reporting skills, she assisted in corporate logistics and travel arrangements, overseeing visits to New York City by many Japanese Prime Ministers and other dignitaries. Presently, Ms. Shibahara serves as a correspondent for "Shokuryo Keizai Tsushinsha" ("Food & Economy Press").
She graciously volunteers as a communication and organizational specialist to other not-for-profit entities, such as:
• a delegate to the National Police Defense Foundation, the U.S.' largest organization supporting active and retired law enforcement officers
• an honorary secretary to Civil Aid Services USA for supporting local communities' emergency preparedness
• a director of communication to the Jackson Family Foundation
• a New York director to the Martial Arts Academy, the United Nations Consultative Status NGO, headquartered in France, established by martial arts grandmaster Fabrice Robeaux.
Ms. Shibahara has accomplished much and has garnered respect throughout her career, particularly in the realm of public services from New York City. Her organization, the Japanese Cultural Exchange, created the first Japan Day Festival as the 30th Anniversary of New York – Tokyo Sister City. Notably, she helped to produce the Children's Day Festival at the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center prior to the devastation of the 9-11 attacks. She has since produced several Japanese theater performances at Central Park. Additionally, she coordinated the United Nations World Heritage event for the Castle Himeji in Japan; the Japanese kimono tie-dye exhibition in the United Nations; and laid the groundwork to arrange an exhibition of the world-renowned kimono designer, late master Itchiku Kubota, for the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C. The Japanese Prime Minister appeared at the grand opening of this event. She has also been an integral force in bringing American cultural figures to Japan, including the film director Spike Lee and Joe Louis, Jr., the son of legendary world heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis, Sr. For these accomplishments and other achievements to her credit, Ms. Shibahara was honored with letters of appreciation from the late New York Mayor David Dinkins in 1990 and from former first lady Laura Bush in 2008.
Likewise very active in the film industry, Ms. Shibahara served as a consultant to the popular Japanese TV program "Iron Chef," and on selections and development for their New York filming, which became the American version of the show: "Iron Chef USA." She also supervised Japanese subtitles for Hollywood movies, including "Men in Black" and "Godzilla," and wrote English subtitles for the Japanese historical drama, "Itosato" in 2018.
As a dedicated civic advocate, Ms. Shibahara considers it extremely important to continuously volunteer for select not-for-profit organizations, and her efforts led directly to the success of the Martial Arts Academy's first international conference at the Kyoto Congress 2020, which is the "United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice," held every five years. This conference was held remotely in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and became the first successful "hybrid" (ground and online) conference in the United Nations' history.
