Now retired, Ms. Ronkin enjoyed a successful career in psychology and education that spanned more than three decades. During this time, she worked for 15 years as an outreach coordinator for the Bellingham Council on Aging Senior Center, a nonprofit organization that offers various classes, activities and services to older populations in Bellingham, Massachusetts, between 2005 and 2020. In this capacity, Ms. Ronkin focused on encouraging and teaching senior citizens how to live healthy lifestyles. She also supported their unique struggles and developed several key programs that helped them to transition out of isolation and back into society. Prior to her tenured appointment in Bellingham, Ms. Ronkin served as the executive director and a psychiatric therapist for the Brocton Family Counseling Center in Brockton, Massachusetts, for more than a decade.
During the course of her lengthy career, Ms. Ronkin has counseled people from all ages and backgrounds, including adolescents, adults, seniors and families, and has enjoyed working with women reentering the workforce. She also spent much of her time with the Department of Family and Children's Services. There, she provided her expertise to homeless individuals and families that were also facing other circumstances, such as separation, abuse and neglect. Additionally, she developed various programs, including one that became a national model, and secured funding to provide scholarships for the children to attend summer camp. Among her many other accomplishments in the field, Ms. Ronkin was active with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health on the developing mental health programs committee.
To pursue her professional goals, Ms. Ronkin achieved a Bachelor of Arts in history, with a minor in psychology, at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) in Amherst in 1965. Continuing her studies years later, she earned a Master of Arts in education in community counseling at UMass in Boston in 1984. Well qualified, Ms. Ronkin is a licensed mental health counselor, certified clinical mental health counselor and certified mandated court reporter.
Ms. Ronkin is a professional member of the American Counseling Association. She notably served on the national board from 1995 to 2010, where she focused her attention on outreach and development. In recognition of her nonprofit initiatives, Ms. Ronkin was named as the Woman of the Year by the Hadassah, Women's Zionist Organization of America in 2004.
